Tennis star Murray ‘lost respect’ for a rising Greek

Andy Murray said that he had “lost respect” for Greek 18-year-old Stefanos Tsitsipas after losing to him in the second round of the Rogers Cup in Montreal.

Asked for his reaction to his defeat, the top seed in the tournament said: “Not great. Obviously, it doesn’t happen all the time in the best league in the world, so for him to have a good week playing against a top-10 player makes him a better player. That was good to see. I thought he played well today.”

The result, the player said, would, however, do nothing to diminish the reputation of Tsitsipas, who has been one of the stars of the tournament after setting up a meeting with the holder of the world No. 1 ranking, Novak Djokovic.

Murray conceded that he had been outplayed by Tsitsipas. “He played really well. He won the first set and I managed to win the second, and that was the difference.”

The result delighted Tsitsipas, who described his victory as “good [but] nothing special” and “just an amazing performance today.”

“Obviously, I think I played really well, but at the same time I didn’t play really well against [Andy Murray],” he said. “In the second set, I was tired. I think it was the first time I’ve played him in an I-week for a while, so physically I was a little bit out of breath and that’s why I lost my concentration in the second set.

“At the same time, I played a lot of good tennis, I felt.”

Another young player on the rise, Croatian Borna Coric, later said: “From being 20 years old to having beaten a top-10 player is incredible. It’s the first time I’ve beaten someone in the top 10.”

Denis Shapovalov, the lone Canadian, was even more effusive.

“I don’t think there is an 18-year-old man that I have played in my entire career that is playing the way that Stefanos is playing right now,” said the 19-year-old, who beat Dominic Thiem 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. “He’s maybe the most athletic guy I’ve played, and he’s hitting the ball unbelievable. I was amazed. I’m really excited for the future.”
